One thing to consider is that this is never going to lead to a large healthy tree, that might provide a gorgeous bonsai, but it's going to have the potential to be problematic for any number of reasons. The lower branches need to be pretty big when they die, and the ENTIRE branch must die, all the way back to the point of the meristem where it emerged from years earlier, usually most trees are able to maintain healthy growth up and down the trunk, and rarely will everything be so uniform as to look as interesting as this tree. Its really hard to duplicate, whether in a bonsai or just a landscape tree. Sometimes it really looks as if the tree has been braided, or something similar. I've found any number of different trees with a similar formation, I'd confirm that it's an effect of lower branches dying off and leaving dead material "in" the trunk while there is still healthy tissue growing around d the dead bits.
